Aya/ Verse/ Miracle:-
The interpreters of the Quran translate it as a Sign (2:37;3:9;36:33). Since it is assumed that the whole of the Quran is the word of Allah, then each aya/verse is a divine revelation and hence in reality it should be translated as a Miracle.
A Sura in the Quran is made up of Ayat (plural), which are Verses or Signs/Miracles. There are 6236 Ayat in the Quran of which approximately 60% (about 3880) are references to Biblical or Rabbinical writings.
The word Aya is not used in the Meccan verses of the Quran - although nine of them were late insertions - but appear in the Madinan ones. The Muhammadan philologers had a struggle to explain its origin.
The word has no root in Arabic and is obviously a borrowing from Hebrew, Aramaic and most probably Syriac. In fact, the word occurs in the poetry of the Christian Arabian Imru'l Qais and hence was known and in use long before Muhammad.
The most surprising 'revelation' in the Quran is the fact that it does not contain a single report of any MIRACLE performed by Muhammad.
On the contrary, in several verses - more than twenty of them - they deny him the ability to perform any, just to 'prove' to the unbelievers either the existence of Allah or to impress the Pagan Arabs so that they may convert.
17: 90 They say: "We shall not believe in thee until thou cause spring to gush forth for us from the earth
91 "Or (until) thou have a garden of date trees and vines and cause rivers to gush forth in their midst carrying abundant water;
92 "Or thou cause the sky to fall in pieces as thou sayest (will happen) against us; or thou bring Allah and the angels before (us) face to face;
93 "Or thou have a house adorned with gold or thou mount a ladder right into the skies. No we shall not even believe in thy mounting until thou send down to us a book that we could read." Say: "Glory to my Lord! am I aught but a man an apostle?"
94 What kept men back from Belief when Guidance came to them was nothing but this: they said "Has Allah sent a man like us to be (His) Apostle?"
All the subsequent stories of 'miracles' attributed to Muhammad, are not only FALSE & UNTRUE, INVENTED reports, CONCOCTED over a period of several hundreds of years by his followers in the Hadiths, but most important of all they CONTRADICT the Quran.
